How does the Mariners Extended Residency program work?

The Mariners Extended Residency (MER) Program is an alcohol and drug-free residential environment. The program provides permanent housing for homeless men with disabilities and is based on the principles of the 12-step recovery model for substance abuse. It requires that residents assist and support one another in recovery from alcoholism and other addictive illnesses. It is an important part of the program that residents treat each other with fairness, dignity, and respect while actively working on the recovery process.

The MER Program offers living space and meals for twenty-eight men in a recovering community for an initial period of up to two years. Men that successfully complete our residential substance abuse treatment program are offered and opportunity, through the application process, to enroll in the permanent housing program. Because of the needs of our target population, special emphasis is given to medical, psychiatric, vocational rehabilitation, recreational activities, and social skills building; MER offers the opportunity to work on all aspects of recovery. Each individual works on his own specific goals (i.e. his particular way of being self-sufficient through person-centered treatment planning) that is established with the assistance of the MER staff.
